The online world has gone a little nuts over Pinterest lately. I can see why, if you are a visual person then Pinterest will talk to you on many levels. As a blogger the boards are a place of great inspiration. Clever marketers are using the visual aspect to affiliate market, to drive traffic and gain exposure.

I am not going to reinvent the wheel and write a guide on how to use Pinterest, many bloggers have done this already. I’ll just share their wise words with you :)

These 6 posts are all about Pinterest, take from them what you need.

Pinterest is basically a visual bookmarking site that has a strong social component built into it, making it easy for things to go viral. Pinterest currently gets about 6 million monthly users and has millions of hits per week, and it’s only going to grow from there.

Jamie Swanson, The ultimate photographers guide to Pinterest

When I first heard about it, I was not eager to jump on this newest bandwagon, but I have begun using it more and more lately as I’ve discovered how much fun it can be! (And, admittedly, when I learned that it is sending traffic to my blog.)

Even if you are not a blogger, you may enjoy this post, but I am mainly writing this for the bloggers out there who, like me, want to use Pinterest more but aren’t sure how to make it beneficial to your blog.

Jo-Lynne Shane, Pinterest for Bloggers

Here’s another example of putting the words on the photo to help explain what the post is about.  I usually don’t take the time for a watermark unless it’s for the vanity shot that I want people to pin.  Then I’ll sometimes add in a little thenester.com just in case the photo is incorrectly sourced.

The nester, Pinterest and blogging, the good, the bad and the huh

If your blog has great photos, then we suggest checking out Pinterest, a fairly new social network that lets users share inspirational images by ‘pinning’ them to mood boards that can be viewed by friends, and other users of the network

Pinterest Tip 2: Repin Away! Finding killer content to pin can be challenging, but repinning is so easy. Best of all, there are thousands of wonderful pins on Pinterest now.

Kelby Carr, 5 tips for beginners on Pinterest

Sure, Pinterest is a great way to share funny pictures and whatnot, but does it have any practical use for bloggers who aren’t working in visual-centric niches? Yes! For example, one of the boards I created is called “Favorite Blog Posts I’ve Written,” and my plan is to use it to pin posts that I’m especially proud of. This has the potential to get out of hand if bloggers use boards to promote every post they write, but with the correct restraint, I think it can bring me a lot of traffic.

Hmmm… I wonder if there’s any potential for using Pinterest for language learners….

I looked at Pinterest for the first time today and it’s certainly very visual, and photos can be excellent tools for teaching language.

I’d like to experiment with it so I’d love an invite please :-)

An invitation should be in your inbox as I type Angela.

The boards where you pin your images could be beneficial for SEO as they are currently do-follow links. Several different boards and some artful pinning could make it a very useful learning tool.

Hi S
Any chance you could slow down on the posts… I can’t comment that fast.

Keep hearing about it.
Brian Gardner wrote a post about it last week.
Time to sign up I think and pin up a few post graphics.

Nice to know that the links are dofollow.

Now please relax and stop blogging.

hehehhehe, I only post here 3 times a week :) Keith, and once a week elsewhere.

I didn’t see Brian’s post last week :( or I would have included it (I am currently half battling Thesis to do what I want and I feel disloyal popping over to the Studiopress community ;) ).

I found we were getting a stream of traffic to a post about grey hair on Birds on the Blog… all from people pinning the images in that post. When I saw that I knew it was a good thing :)

I suspect we’re going to see a resurgence of more focused social networks in the next few years, where interaction returns to a community interest rather than large-volume social chat. Not that this has ever really gone away, but the many active specialist forums tend to be ignored by media commentators. Pinterest sounds like a great way of gathering a like-minded group in a fresh way.

I’m on Pinterest’s ‘waiting list’ so Sarah, an invitation would be great. Thank you.

I love Pinterest for the visual aspect of it. Using it for selling ebooks seems weird to me and using it for affiliate marketing seems weird to me also. I do however love “seeing” new and beautiful things.

I would have no problem in buying from a board if it was something I wanted. But if a person only sold stuff, and that’s all their boards were then I would have a problem with that. It needs to have a balance.

I love images online. It’s just that I have always find it difficult to find ones I was interested in looking at because they are really cataloged by words and if the people uploading them did not choose their words in the description well, then the images were not so interesting to look at.

Pinterest could be very interesting for me, being a very visual person. think it is a very cool way to make wonderful and often interesting images available to anyone. Thank you for sharing this information in this post, I would love an invite.

Hi Sarah – valuable info, as usual! Being a science geeky kind of person, I wondered how we could use Pinterest either as simply a public understudying of science ( wonderful acronym – of course – PUS (!)) tool – dramatic images from scientific articles / Horizon-type TV shows OR for scientists to pin images that visualise their data for other scientists benefit – or just for cute kittens…?

Oooh, I am so tempted to answer cute kittens ;)

Visuals of that data would work, have you seen pinaquote.com? highlight the text and it will turn the text into an image and you can pin the image :)

If I were you, I’d have all the boards you mention above and see what people are interested in.
Have you seen this? This is fantastic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DZGINaRUEkU and it’s a pin that’s science, it’s video and it’s incredibly share-able. Oh and it has Morgan Freeman and that Brian Cox chap.

I’ve been on Pinterest for over a year now & have to say I’ve met some wonderful people through it. I mainly ‘Pin for Pleasure’ but do have a board just for my own stuff via my website & blog.

I find the only downside is pinning lots of projects but never having any time to try them out due to the addictive nature of ‘just one more pin’ taking over your spare time! If you can kerb your pins its a really useful tool.
